A freezer works in exactly the same way as a refigerator, but at much lower temperatures. The aim is to provide long-term storage of perishable foods. Freezers can be integrated into refrigerators as a separate compartment, but many are separate units altogether.
Many freezers stand upright as a fridge does, but there are also top-loading chest-style models. This configuration is most common in so-called deep freezers, which are larger and colder to allow for even longer storage periods. Upright freezers will typically stand at waist height, but can be up to around six feet tall.
You can find freezers from most of the major household-appliance manufacturers –Zanussi, Electrolux, Haier, Avanti, Whirlpool, and Frigidaire are just some of the many names.
Consider carefully what size of freezer you need. Some people cook a lot of their food from fresh and might only need the small freezer compartments found in some refrigerators. These are usually large enough to store a couple of pots of ice cream, a tray of ice cubes, and maybe a bag of oven fries.
Other people like to keep a lot of frozen vegetables on hand or to cook meals in bulk for later consumption; in these situations, it might be worth your while buying a separate freezer unit. But bear in mind that if you don’t make proper use of it, the extra power consumption will simply go to waste. Of course, you should also take measurements to make sure you have enough space for a larger freezer.
